The case for lotteries as a tiebreaker of quality in research funding


Earlier this month, the British Academy, the United Kingdom’s national academy for humanities and social sciences, introduced a lottery for awarding small research grants. In this editorial, Nature argues that other funders should also do the same in tiebreaker cases where peer review deems grants to be of similar quality.
